Saturday 14 May 2016 - Day 17
Burgos to Hornillos del Camino - 21 km
Left Becky behind this morning, as she was staying on in Burgos for a day off. Walked out of town under grey but dry skies. Felt great to be on my way again.
The scenery was a bit uninspiring for a while, past the prison and then diversions due to road works.
On my own for most of today, and early on there weren't many pilgrims out and about.
Stopped at Tarajos for a late breakfast stop...lovely fresh croissant straight from the oven. The village of Rabe de las Calzades was next, where a stork had set up a nest on the church tower.
From here the way climbed onto the Meseta, a high plain of endless crops. My feet and legs, after a few days off, got quite weary as we climbed on a rocky path surrounded by green crops.
I continued to walk alone, having plenty of time to think of my Mum on this day, a year since she passed away. One of her little bears is enjoying the Camino attached to my pack.
Stopped for a food break with two German girls who were walking just ahead of me. Passing by, was the English couple (June and Joe) I'd met on my first day. Very happy to see Hornillos del Camino come into view, down a big hill and away in the distance.
Staying at Albergue Meeting Point, brand new and purpose built. Each bunk has its own reading light and power point. Ana is staying, but in a different room from me. I have Stewart, a young Scotsman, on my top bunk tonight. Sat with him, an Irishman and a Brit at the shared dinner.
Dinner was fantastic! Check out our paella.
Hoping for a good sleep after a poor one last night. Lots of pilgrims having trouble finding beds. The Camino is so busy.
